Tuesday 14th Club Drive out and Private visit to Langham Dome Museum
NNCVC members will be able to view the museum for an entrance fee of £5 discounted from the normal fee of £6.50. In addition to the museum there is a large grass area together with a number of trestle tables for those who wish to include a picnic as part of the visit. The museum will be opened specially for us from 11.00 am till 3.00 pm. As the museum is housed inside the dome it is advisable that we stagger our arrivals throughout the time period it is open. You should allow at least an hour to view the museum to get the most from your visit. Tea and coffee will be available to purchase. Please let Bob know if you wish to join us for this drive out day in beautiful North Norfolk. He will have a number of pre-purchased tickets available from early August should you wish to guarantee a ticket. Contact Bob either by email firstname.lastname@example.org or tel 01263 826335. Once these have gone then tickets can be bought at the entrance when we visit on the 14th September at the same discounted price of £5.
Langham Dome is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and one of only a handful of anti-aircraft gunnery domes left in the UK. In 2013 the Langham Dome military museum was opened as a visitor attraction. The museum reveals the significance of the Dome and RAF Langham in the defence of Britain during and after World War II. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by service personnel whilst also providing a fascinating social history for the village of Langham itself.Long before digital virtual reality was invented, moving images projected onto the inside of the Dome taught trainees how to shoot down enemy aircraft. Eighty years after the end of World War 2, a visit to the Dome offers a unique opportunity to journey back in time and experience what life was like for those who served at RAF Langham. For those of you who have never driven past the dome turn off the A148 between Holt and Fakenham when you see the sign for Langham. Upon entering Langham Village on the Holt Road, continue past the church on your left. Turn right onto Cockthorpe Road and follow it for half a mile. You will see the Dome on your right hand side.If travelling on the A149 (coast road), turn south at Morston following the signs to Langham. On entering Langham, continue forward and turn right at the crossroads by the church. Turn right onto Cockthorpe Road as above. If all else fails use the postcode NR25 7BP.
